When a syrup factory in Ballina closed its doors in 1984, David Kelly could hardly have imagined that this setback would lead to four decades of pioneering work in the Irish essential oils industry.
David Kelly’s path to founding Atlantic Aromatics began in an unlikely place: the laboratory of a syrup factory in Co. Mayo. When the factory closed in 1984 with no job prospects in sight, David and his wife Áine, who had developed an interest in natural foods and herbalism, decided to open a health store.
“We started stocking oils in the shop and after a year we closed the shop and kept going with the oils,” David recalls. What started as a small section of their health store quickly became their passion and life’s work.
David’s scientific background in geology and chemistry, combined with his lifelong interest in plants, made essential oils a perfect fit. “Once I came across essential oils I found the combination of botany, therapy, chemistry and commerce really fascinating,” he explains. This unique blend of scientific knowledge and natural curiosity would become the foundation of Atlantic Aromatics’ approach.
Atlantic Aromatics specialises in essential oils from organically grown plants, developing working relationships with oil producers from around the world.
